Josh’s First Girlfriend

11/3/07: Joshua was in the kitchen taping up a paper. “Josh, what are you doing?” I asked. Josh replied, “I’m making a picture for my girlfriend because we are going to marry each other.” There’s a girl at day care named Reese. Reese and Josh are best friends. In fact, Reese has chased Joshua and when she caught him she kissed him on the arm! Last week Reese went to Thailand for the rest of the month to visit family.

“Josh, what did you draw for Reese?”

“I drawed a picture of the two of us holding each other’s hands.” Josh walked over with the picture and sure enough it’s two stick figures holding hands.

“How will she get this picture if she’s far away?” I inquired.

“You’re going to send it to her, Mom. And when her mom gets it she’ll say, ‘Reese, come and look. Joshua made a picture for you!’ And she’ll like it and send one back to me,” he explained.

So…after taping it all up, Josh crammed the picture into a reply envelope. The envelope is one of the pre-addressed ones you receive with credit card offers. He wrote on the front of the envelope, “To Reeeese Josh” and asked me to mail it. I told him I would. It’s hard to lie to your kids but it’s even harder to break their little hearts.

I’m stashing a copy of this email with the envelope in his memory box in our closet. It’ll be fun to open it 20 years from now.
